user interface

Want to know what separates good website design companies from awful ones? The good ones understand what makes a user interface successful. The user interface (or UI) of a website is the most vital aspect of any website, and if it is poorly designed, users will not stick around for long. Here are some tips on improving the UI design for your next website project

Five tips from a website design company to create a fantastic user interface

1. Get to know your users

Creating a stunning UI starts with understanding the people who will be using it. It should be the first step in designing a UI because if you get it wrong here, your UI will never provide users with a positive experience.

Get ready to research your audience and figure who they are, what they need, common behaviors to expect from this group, how they use websites, and what they will expect from the interface. When you combine this knowledge with your target audience’s demographics, you will have the best shot at designing a UI that will impress them.

2. At a glance

Make navigation easy for your users by putting everything they need at a glance. If your users need to scroll endlessly or click through multiple pages to find what they are looking for, they’ll go looking for it somewhere else. This step is especially important if your audience does not consist of digital-natives. People who grew up without digital media may take a little longer to adapt to changes, and they might not have the same intuition for digital interfaces as a younger audience. By making everything accessible, you’re casting the widest net possible.

3. Simplify as much as possible

There is beauty in simplicity, and it is convenient too. If you can make your interface simple, you’ll have fewer complaints and issues to deal with. Simplify your UI by using visual cues and elements to break up sections, use dark text on light backgrounds (and vice-versa) and implement white space to keep your designs from looking cluttered and becoming visually overwhelming.

4. Be quick and responsive

Nobody likes being left to guess what is going on, so be sure to design your UI to give feedback quickly and respond immediately. If your UI doesn’t indicate when it is busy processing something, or when input is needed, your users will wonder what is going on and either duck out of the process, or resubmit information. This could lead to higher bounce rates, and it could break parts of the process if the system is overloaded with submissions.

5. Be consistent

Consistency in your design will help your users to react more intuitively to your design. If you keep rearranging and changing elements, you will confuse even the most digital-savvy user. Consistency also extends to the fonts, logos, and general design aesthetic on your site and should be aligned with the overall brand identity of the website you are creating.

Updating your website? Stay away from these design trends!

If you are planning a new web design, then it’s important to get things right from the concept phase. Avoid these design trends to make sure your new site is a hit:

Hiding everything in a hamburger menu

From fashion and interior design to web development – minimalism is a key trend these days. It’s easy to see why people would want to declutter their websites, but don’t let people land on your home page and not be able to find any text, images, links or buttons. The ‘hamburger menu’ isn’t just something that we’re not a fan of, it’s hard for visually impaired people and non-web savvy web users to find and navigate websites with this navigation structure and menu. If users can’t easily find what they are looking for on the front page of your site, they are probably not going to stick around for very long.

Missing search bars

Regardless of the navigation structure and menu options that you choose for your website design, make sure you have a search bar. Website visitors know that if they are struggling to find something on a website, they will usually be able to type a keyword, product or service into a search bar and find relevant pages within the site, so make sure you are offering people this functionality. Every page on your website should have a search bar that is up top and easy to find.

A common web design trend these days is to replace the search bar with an icon of a magnifying glass. So instead of needing a lot of space for the search bar, you only need to dedicate a small space for the image of the magnifying icon.

Odd fonts

Somewhere along the way, people decided that black text on a white background is overrated. There is plenty of room to experiment with a warmer hue background and a softer black font, but don’t stray too far from the norm.

It’s understandable that people want their website to stand out from the millions of other sites online, but using dark grey fonts on a light grey background, for example, isn’t the way to go. Make sure that the readability of your website’s content is very good, or you won’t have anyone reading your content.

Carousels

Carousels, also known as slideshows, don’t really remove functionality from the site but make sure that you’re not adding a slideshow that doesn’t provide any functionality, either. Slideshows can easily become distracting for website visitors and a lot of extra images can add to the load time of your web pages.

5 key elements of a successful website design

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all recipe to create a successful website. As many of the best website design companies know, websites vary greatly in terms of content, style, look, feel and functionality depending on what the client wants to achieve. There are, however, a few key elements that you need to keep in mind when embarking on any web design project. These include the following:

  1. Responsive design

Gone are the days when your website could be a static one-pager on the internet. Today, an increasing number of people are browsing websites from their mobile phones and tablets. This means that your website needs to look great and be easy to read and navigate across a variety of platforms. Hiring a digital agency that is experienced in responsive website design is key to a successful website.

  1. Speed

We live in a customer driven world when people want what they want, when they want it. If a person reaches your website via a search engine, then they will decide whether your website is worthwhile to spend time on in less than half a minute. Not only do you need to ensure that you have the right content and layout to grab your potential customers’ attention, but you need to make sure that the pages load quickly as well.

To make sure that pages load as quickly as possible, your graphics need to be optimized correctly. Remember that your home page is like a storefront, so you need to make sure people know where to click to find what they need within those 30 seconds.

  1. Great content

Not only does your content have to appeal to your target audience, but it also has to be meaningful and captivating. Be sure to hire a digital agency that also specializes in Search Engine Optimization, as strategically sprinkling keywords throughout your content pages can have a dramatic impact on how easy (or hard!) it will be for search engine users to find your pages online.

  • Images, layout and navigation

The images and layout will require creative input, while the navigation of your site will require the input of a strategic internet marketer. A good website design company will have graphic designers, art directors and creatives, as well as digital marketers who can guide you through the process.

  • Clear call to actions and authority building

If you want people to type in their credit card details, give you their email address or pick up the phone and call you, then these call to actions need to be worked into the copy and included in great visual representations. You will also need an About Us page and even testimonials that show your reputation and authority in the industry.
